Pump Station 186

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Pump Station 186 is located at 2369 11th Ave South in Grand Forks, ND. Due to severe localized flooding in previous years, a study was conducted in 2020 to determine what was causing it and what could be done to minimize it. It was determined that this area of town could benefit from increased stormwater pumping capacity. The storm station (Pump Station 188) directly adjacent to this area had too small a lot to build a bigger station; however, the city was able to find a nearby lot to build a new pump station to help with this area’s stormwater flow.

This project includes the installation of Pump Station 186, updates to Pump Station 188, and 2 additional pumps in Pump Station 182 at the southeast corner of S 20th Street and 11th Avenue S. To accommodate the additional flow from the new station and the additional pumps at Pump Station 182, a second stormwater forcemain is being installed in the south berm of 11th Ave South. This will cross Columbia Road and tie in to a much larger stormwater line on the west side of Columbia Road.

PROJECT STATUS

(updates to the project will be provided here. Last update: 08/29/2025)

Currently, Pump Station 186 has all of the underground structure installed. The precast building was installed at the beginning of May. The General Contractor is completing minor punch list items and plans to remove the fence at the end of next week. Electricians are continuing to run conduits and wires. They are working on setting the transformer pad for the utility power. They have also reinstalled the streetlights and pedestrian crossing signal that were removed to install the storm water forcemain pipe. They will continue to work on installing fiber optic in the south berm of 11th when their crew has availability.

The concrete subcontractor reinstalled curb and gutter from 20th St to 22nd St. They will continue to install sidewalk and curb and gutter next week as well as install the paving on 11th Ave near Columbia Road.

The contractor is finishing up installing the pipe under 11th Ave just east of Columbia Road. They will be backfilling and grading the area on Tuesday, next to prepare for the pavement to be installed on Wednesday through Friday.

Part of the work on Columbia Road involves bypassing two sanitary lift stations. One of the stations is located in the northeast corner of the intersection of Columbia Road and 11th Avenue South. This lift station will be bypassed with above-ground piping from the lift station to Demers Ave. The other lift station is located just east of the Alerus Center, at the intersection of 11th Avenue South and South 40th Street. The above-ground bypass piping will be placed adjacent to the shared use path between 42nd Street and 40th Street. This bypass piping will extend to 17th Avenue South.

The contractor is anticipating crossing Columbia Road starting on September 8th. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. This section of piping had to be completed last to ensure all the stormwater pump stations remained operational.

Project is expected to last till the end of September.
